PSN provides training in electrical and instrumentation as well as structural and piping design. Our accelerated professional development enables students to gain an SVQ Level 3 (equivalent to NVQ Level 3 or City and Guilds Level 3) qualification in drafting and design through the 'Modern Apprenticeship' initiative.

John Kearney, PSN Technical director, comments "Designers make an invaluable contribution to developing our oil and gas facilities and we are committed to training students through our design academy."

The initiative has received widespread praise from the industry. Bill Murray, Chief executive of the UK Offshore Contractors Association, said "We are delighted that PSN has developed yet another ground-breaking training project. The training provided as part of the PSN design academy will benefit the industry as a whole. We look forward to working closely with PSN and other member companies to develop further opportunities for people looking to adapt their existing skills and join the Energy sector."

Blair Barclay, Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) accounts manager, added "PSN has taken another progressive step forward to develop skilled apprentices. We are delighted to support PSN to achieve its aim of developing innovative solutions to industry skills gaps."

PSN Design Academy 2011

Entries to the 2010 Design Academy have now closed.

Applications for the 2011 Design Academy will open in September 2010.

"As part of the training we received in Aberdeen, we had the chance to visit the actual structures that we draw on paper. We were also given the opportunity to ask our advisors about manufacturing and basically get any queries answered about what our future could look like once we are qualified.

“It was very helpful to visit places which are directly connected with electrical and instrumentation design. The highlight for me was visiting the ASET training centre where we could see small existing process lines for the oil industry – like Weatherford drilling centre, where the working drill rig is installed for training."
Andrey Vaseev, Electrical and instrumentation designer, Sakhalin

"The highlight for me was visiting MacLean Electrical, Hydrasun and Score Group, which are all directly connected with electrical and instrumentation design. Travelling overseas has been a really good experience too and I’m glad I was offered this opportunity by PSN."
Saltanat Aybarov, Electrical and instrumentation designer, Atyrau

"Overall, it was a good experience and I would recommend it to other trainees in coming years."
Jaydon Gawne, Electrical and instrumentation designer, Australia
